GM to source EV batteries from CATL

General Motors will temporarily import EV batteries from China’s CATL, as the automaker works to produce its own lower-cost lithium-iron-phosphate cells, according to some leading news providers(Reuters, WSJ).
GM currently offers 12 U.S. EV models with domestically made battery packs and plans to begin LFP production stateside by 2027. Facing fierce competition from Chinese manufacturers and higher tariffs on critical components, GM’s rival Ford is also partnering with CATL technology to reduce costs, with its Michigan battery plant slated to start operations in 2026 under revised federal tax-credit rules.
