Global micromobility fleet to hit 37.8 million by 2029 as market matures, says Berg Insight
Press Release, 15 October 2025
The global micromobility sector is entering a new phase of consolidation and technological advancement, with the total number of shared micromobility vehicles projected to climb from 27.6 million in 2024 to 37.8 million by 2029, according to new research from Berg Insight. The report highlights how services offering short-term rentals of light vehicles—such as bikes, scooters, and e-scooters—are becoming a mainstream component of urban transport networks worldwide.
After years of volatility marked by rapid growth, mergers, and shutdowns, the market is now stabilizing, driven by partnerships, multimodal fleets, and advanced telematics integration. Many operators are moving beyond single-vehicle models to offer combinations of bikes, stand-up scooters, sit-down scooters, and even small electric cars. Bikesharing remains the largest segment, with 25.7 million shared bikes worldwide by the end of 2024, dominated by China’s free-floating systems. Leading operators include Hellobike, Didi Qingju, Meituan Bike, Lime, Bolt, and JCDecaux.
The stand-up scootersharing market, which began in 2017, continues its rapid rise, reaching 1.8 million shared scooters in 2024, led by companies like Voi, Dott, Lime, and Bird. However, regulations remain fragmented, with cities imposing limits on fleet sizes and operator licenses to manage congestion and safety concerns. Meanwhile, sit-down scootersharing—less heavily regulated—counted around 147,000 vehicles globally, led by Cooltra, Yulu, Marti Technologies, and GoShare.
Telematics remains at the heart of micromobility’s evolution. Providers such as Lyft Urban Solutions, Nextbike, Omni Intelligent Technology, and Teltonika Telematics are enabling connected operations through hardware, fleet management, and AI-driven optimization software. As automation improves fleet balancing, battery swapping, and predictive maintenance, profitability is becoming more attainable. According to Erica Rickard, IoT Analyst at Berg Insight, the industry is shifting toward efficiency and sustainability—signaling a more mature, data-driven era for shared mobility worldwide.
