GAIL Ltd. to launch green hydrogen project by April
Date: March 27, 2024. — GAIL (India) Ltd., a natural gas company in India, manages the country’s vast natural gas infrastructure for transmission, marketing and distribution, is gearing up to commission its maiden green hydrogen project in central India by April, according to company sources. This development marks a significant stride towards India’s clean energy ambitions.
The project is located at the Vijaipur complex in Madhya Pradesh. It will harness a 10-megawatt proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser, imported from Canada, to produce green hydrogen. PEM electrolysis is an eco-friendly process that splits water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable electricity.
The upcoming facility is expected to generate roughly 4.3 metric tons of hydrogen daily, boasting an exceptionally high purity of 99.999% by volume. Sources familiar with the project’s progress anticipate commissioning to occur in April. Production is expected to commence within a month after ironing out any initial challenges.
This initiative aligns with India’s goal of reaching a remarkable 5 million tons of annual green hydrogen production capacity by 2030. Green hydrogen, unlike its conventional counterpart derived from fossil fuels, is a clean-burning fuel and holds immense potential for curbing greenhouse gas emissions.
While GAIL sources have provided these details, the company’s communication department has yet to officially confirm the information.
