CASC, China tests liquid hydrogen based heavy duty truck
The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) has been working on 100-kilogram class vehicle-mounted liquid hydrogen system, dubbed “Track 1000.” This system is a crucial component for enabling long-range, zero-emission heavy-duty trucks.
Liquid Hydrogen Storage is core of the system. It is a specialized tank designed to store hydrogen in its liquid state (LH2). Liquid hydrogen is incredibly cold (below -253°C or -423°F), which allows for a much higher energy density compared to gaseous hydrogen, meaning more fuel can be stored in a smaller volume. This is essential for achieving longer driving ranges.
The “Track 1000” system can carry up to 100 kilograms of liquid hydrogen. With this capacity, hydrogen-powered heavy trucks equipped with the system are projected to achieve a range of over 1,000 kilometers (over 621 miles) on a single refill. Some reports even suggest it could enable a range of up to 1,300 km.
The “Track 1000” system adopts a forward-design and modular concept, integrating five major modules: the liquid hydrogen cylinder, valve boxes, vaporization buffers, controls, and load-bearing structures.
China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC)
China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) is a state-owned enterprise in China, serving as the primary contractor for the country’s space program. It is responsible for the design, development, and manufacture of various aerospace products, including launch vehicles, satellites, manned spacecraft, and strategic and tactical missile systems.
