CarbonScape gets patent for technology to convert biochar into graphite

News, 22 March 2025
CarbonScape Limited has announced the receipt of a significant U.S. patent (Patent No. US12187615B2).
The patent is about producing graphite from biochar. CarbonScape’s proprietary approach transforms biochar and related materials into low-surface-area graphite, which is crucial for lithium-ion battery anodes used in EVs and energy storage solutions.
Vincent Ledoux-Pedailles, Chief Commercial Officer at CarbonScape, stated, “Obtaining this U.S. patent marks a significant milestone, validating the unique advantages of our technology. By creating an affordable domestic graphite supply from U.S. forestry resources, we provide manufacturers with a stable, scalable, and sustainable alternative, while also reducing environmental impacts and supply chain risks.”
Currently, China controls 95% of the global supply of battery-grade graphite, which leads to cost instability and vulnerabilities for EV manufacturers across the globe.
By utilizing locally sourced biomass and capitalizing on favorable policy conditions, CarbonScape aims to emerge as a leading domestic source of renewable battery-grade graphite.
- Sustainable Renewable Feedstock: CarbonScape has established agreements to procure substantial amounts of woodchips in the U.S. The strong forestry industry, particularly in the Southeastern region, ensures a steady and cost-effective supply to support large-scale graphite production, while also providing resilience and economic opportunities for the U.S. forestry sector.
- Supportive Policies and Funding: The U.S. government emphasizes the need for domestic critical minerals through various initiatives from the Department of Energy (DOE) and Department of Defense (DOD), along with high import tariffs on Chinese graphite and executive orders aimed at developing strategic materials. These initiatives resonate with CarbonScape’s goal to build a secure domestic graphite supply chain.
- Efficient Permitting and Regulation: The regulatory environment in the U.S. is comparatively efficient and adaptable for industrial projects, allowing for rapid scaling of production aided by federal support for domestic critical mineral projects.
