BYD unveils electric supercar Yangwang U9, targets luxury market
Date: February 27, 2024. — BYD unveiled its new electric supercar, the Yangwang U9. It has a starting price of $233,000. U9 aims to take on the likes of Ferrari in the high-performance car market.
BYD established the Yangwang brand last year to enter the luxury segment. The U9 claims 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) acceleration in just 2.36 seconds.
The U9 also has features such as a “crab walk” mode for operating in small areas. It also has the ability to float on water in an emergency and the ability to travel on three wheels if one of them is destroyed.
The U9 runs on the e4 Platform and includes the BYD-developed DiSus-X Intelligent Body Control System. It also uses a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which is inexpensive and does not rely on costly metals like cobalt. LFP batteries have become popular among electric vehicle makers.
This electric supercar directly targets established brands like Ferrari and Lamborghini in terms of pricing and performance. While BYD is a newcomer in the luxury market, its technological advancements and competitive price point could attract a new generation of buyers seeking high-performance electric vehicles.
The launch of the U9 signifies BYD’s ambition to expand beyond affordable electric cars and compete in the high-end market. Moreover, observers will closely watch its success, or lack thereof, as it challenges the dominance of traditional supercar makers in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle landscape. The U9’s sleek design, lightning-fast acceleration, and eco-friendly powertrain make it a strong competitor in the supercar category. With deliveries scheduled to begin this summer.
