BYD introduces ultra-fast charging EV that could rival Tesla Model 3
Press Release, 10 March 2026
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has unveiled a new generation of EV technology capable of charging in just minutes, a development that could intensify competition with popular electric sedans such as the Tesla Model 3. The company recently introduced its advanced Flash Charging technology, which can charge an electric vehicle battery from 10% to 70% in about five minutes under optimal conditions. This breakthrough aims to reduce one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption long charging times and bring the charging experience closer to the convenience of refueling a conventional gasoline car.
The ultra-fast charging EV technology introduced by BYD is expected to debut in two new models:
- BYD Han L – an electric sedan
- BYD Tang L – an electric SUV
These vehicles will be the first to feature BYD’s Super e-Platform, which supports extremely fast charging speeds of up to 1,000 kW, enabling the battery to add around 400 km of driving range in about five minutes.

The rapid charging capability is powered by BYD’s next-generation Blade Battery and high-power charging infrastructure, designed to handle extremely high charging currents safely. The system uses advanced battery chemistry and optimized internal design to improve energy flow while minimizing heat buildup during ultra-fast charging. In some cases, the battery can reach nearly full capacity in under ten minutes, significantly reducing waiting times at charging stations. This technology also works alongside BYD’s plans to expand a large network of Flash Charging stations, which are expected to be deployed widely across China in the coming years to support the new generation of EVs.
Blade Battery is a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology developed by BYD for electric vehicles. It is designed to offer higher safety, longer lifespan, and better space efficiency compared to traditional EV batteries.
Industry observers believe that such rapid-charging capabilities could reshape the EV landscape by making electric vehicles more practical for everyday use. Traditional fast chargers used by many EV manufacturers can take significantly longer to deliver comparable driving range, meaning drivers often need to wait much longer during road trips. BYD’s technology, however, could deliver hundreds of kilometers of driving range in just a few minutes, helping address consumer concerns around range anxiety and charging convenience.
The development also signals the growing strength of Chinese automakers in electric vehicle innovation. BYD has rapidly expanded its presence in the global EV market and continues to invest heavily in battery technology, charging infrastructure, and vehicle platforms. With ultra-fast charging capabilities and competitively priced EV models, the company is positioning itself as a strong rival to established electric vehicle brands. As charging technology continues to evolve, innovations like BYD’s Flash Charging system could accelerate the broader transition toward electric mobility worldwide.
