By the year 2027, Greaves Electric, a prominent producer of electric two- and three-wheelers, intends to set up an internal battery pack production line at its Ranipet factory in Tamil Nadu. This program is in line with the business’s plan to raise product quality, supply chain dependability, and cost effectiveness.
Greaves Cotton Ltd.’s electric mobility division in Bengaluru manufactures electric two-wheelers under the Ampere brand and three-wheelers with internal combustion engines (ICE) and electric propulsion under the Ele, Greaves, and Electra brands. Currently, a large amount of the company’s production costs—33% for Ampere two-wheelers and 54% for electric three-wheelers—come from outside vendors for its constructed battery packs.
The new assembly line will have a 400,000 unit production capacity and is expected to start operations in July 2026 after being commissioned in May 2026. From the proceeds of its planned ₹1,000 crore initial public offering (IPO), Greaves Electric intends to set aside ₹82.9 crore for this project.
The corporation highlighted the long-term objective of backward integration to attain increased supply chain autonomy in its Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP). The switch to Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries, which have a longer lifespan and greater temperature resistance, is another aspect of this action.
Greaves Electric is constantly investigating cutting-edge battery compositions and technologies to lower prices, increase charging effectiveness, and boost overall performance. Although no formal agreements have been reached, it has identified 13 possible suppliers for battery cells—the raw material for its assembly line—in South-East Asia, China, and India.
Currently producing 480,000 Ampere electric two-wheelers annually, the Ranipet factory is one of the company’s three manufacturing facilities. To further strengthen its dedication to innovation and sustainable transportation solutions, Greaves Electric also intends to use ₹375.3 crore from the proceeds of its initial public offering (IPO) to further product and technology development at its Bengaluru technology center.
