Adani Group set to build India’s biggest battery storage facility by March 2026

News, 13 November 2025

The Adani Group has announced plans to construct a landmark battery energy storage system (BESS) at its massive renewable energy complex in Khavda, Gujarat — a move that would make it the largest single-location storage project in India and among the largest globally. Set for completion by March 2026, the facility will be rated at 1,126 MW (power capacity) and 3,530 MWh (energy storage capacity) — enough to deliver over 1 GW of power for roughly three hours.

Beyond the immediate build-out, the Adani Group aims to scale its storage portfolio to 15 GWh by March 2027 and eventually reach a target of 50 GWh within five years.
This massive build-up is being driven by India’s surging renewable-energy deployment and the need to stabilise grid supply as intermittent solar and wind output expand. The Khavda site is already home to one of the world’s largest hybrid solar-wind projects, and the BESS will help store excess generation, shave peak demand and improve grid reliability.

By moving into large-scale storage, the Adani Group is signalling a shift from being a pure renewable generator to a vertically integrated clean-energy operator — managing not only generation but also storage and grid-level flexibility. The initiative aligns with India’s goal of delivering cleaner and more dependable electricity to meet burgeoning demand and decarbonise the power sector.
As battery manufacturing, energy-management systems and containerised storage technologies evolve, this project could serve as a benchmark for how India scales storage infrastructure to support its clean-power ambitions.
