Yandex is testing its self-driving cars in extreme winter conditions

Yandex, the Russian internet giant is testing its self-driving cars in winter conditions. The company is trying to find out how self-driving cars can be used in extreme winter conditions when snow covers the road causing visibility and navigation challenges. The company has released a video which shows its autonomous Prius performing the task up to the mark in the suburbs of Moscow.

These tests are important as for self-driving cars to become the mainstream need to perform tasks better than humans in challenging conditions. There are certain geographies that face extreme conditions and if these cars are successful there they can ease of the burden of driving for humans. The prototypes based on Toyota Prius were modified to run tests with a help from the NAMI (The Central research and development automobile and engine institute).
