Volvo selects the NVIDIA AI car computer for its next generation of vehicles

DRIVE AGX Xavier is a highly integrated AI car computer that will enable Volvo to streamline development of self-driving capabilities while reducing total cost of development and support.

Volvo Cars has selected the NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Xavier™ computer for its next generation of vehicles, the Swedish automaker announced. The production of these vehicles will be starting from early 2020s and initial production release delivering Level 2+ assisted driving features, going beyond traditional advanced driver assistance systems.

DRIVE AGX Xavier is a highly integrated AI car computer that will enable Volvo to streamline development of self-driving capabilities while reducing total cost of development and support.

The companies are working together to develop automated driving capabilities, integrating 360-degree surround perception and a driver monitoring system. The NVIDIA-based computing platform will enable Volvo to implement new connectivity services, energy management technology, in-car personalization options, and autonomous drive technology.

NVIDIA DRIVE AGX incorporates the NVIDIA Xavier system-on-a-chip built for autonomous driving. Architected for safety, the Xavier SoC incorporates six different types of processors for redundant and diverse algorithms.

Volvo and NVIDIA in June 2017 had announced that they are developing a Level 4 highly automated driving system — also using the scalable NVIDIA DRIVE platform — in collaboration with Veoneer and Zenuity.
