The motive behind this exercise not to develop and sell self-driving cars but to help it arise as a component and solutions provider.Samsung had also acquired HARMAN few months back which also highlights its seriousness towards becoming a leader in this segment.

As Self-driving cars call for the collaboration of various cutting-edge technologies from the automobile, artificial intelligence and information communication sectors. So this endeavour helps the companies to understand various aspects of the technology and hence can align themselves better.
