NXP Semiconductors is in talks with Baidu on a partnership to promote self-driving technology, according to a report by ChinaDaily. The automotive market in China is expanding rapidly and has surpassed the US market to become the largest. The technological advancements in the country have given a boost to the electric cars and connected car market, attracting investments from companies around the world.
Reports say, Radar solutions, computer technology, and cyber security issues are the areas in which partnership between the companies is being discussed. NXP has recently signed agreements with three major car makers in China, namely Changan Automobile, Geely Automobile Group and Guangzhou Automobile, for cooperation in electric and autonomous vehicles. NXP now wants to open an application center to supply critical products like microprocessors to it local partners. It has for this has signed an agreement with the government of Chonqing.
NXP, now a subsidiary of Qualcomm has around 15% share in the automotive semiconductor market and is one of the leading companies in this sector. China is emerging as the hub for advanced vehicles so the company’s interest in the country’s market is obvious. Baidu has also established itself as one of the important players in the autonomous vehicles market with the launch of Project Apollo in which it is working with a number of companies. So the cooperation between the companies will serve both the companies.
