Lyft gets permit to test its driverless cars in California

Lyft, U.S. ride-hailing firm as becoming the latest company to have secured permits from California Department of Motor Vehicles to test its vehicles on the roads of the state. This is a significant achievement for the company that has got partnerships with many key companies working in this field. The company had also recently announced its plans to offer self-driving taxi service in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Lyft has also secured $1 billion in new funding led by Alphabet through its CapitalG venture capital arm. The fresh funding has helped the company to increase its valuation by 50% to around $11 billion. The company has also got a partnership with automaker Ford on a self-driving car. Lyft is also working with Waymo, nuTonomy, Drive.ai and has formed a separate division for the self-driving car. The company has also set itself an ambitious target of providing 1 billion rides per year using electric, autonomous vehicles by 2025.
