Foxconn asks for autonomous vehicle lane as part of I-94 expansion

Last month Racine County, Mount Pleasant and a subsidiary of Foxconn Technology Group had signed a “memorandum of understanding” to build, with extensive public assistance, a huge electronics manufacturing campus in the village.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is constructing the I-94 North-South corridor in southeast Wisconsin. This project is aimed at improving safety while reducing congestion and modernizing the important 35-mile transportation artery.

According to some news reports Foxconn Technology Group has asked for an autonomous vehicle lane to be included in the expansion of Interstate 94 North-South in Racine County. What may be the reason behind the company’s demand is not clear yet, it could have applications in the deployment of the products of the company or in the transportation of workers.

There were also reports that Foxconn is planning to build multi-billion dollar autonomous vehicle research and development facility in Michigan. Foxconn is the world’s largest electronics manufacturer and supplier to Apple and these developments may point out to a possible plan by the company to foray into autonomous vehicles.
