After two recent accidents, one involving one of Uber’s self-driving cars in Arizona, and another Tesla’s Model X vehicles, California Department of Motor Vehicles has adopted new regulations for the testing of driverless cars.
DMV will now have three different permit options for testing with a driver, testing without driver and for deployment respectively. The vehicles will also have to meet the definition of an SAE Level 4 or 5 vehicle. The companies will also have to make sure with deployment are capable to respond to different road situations and comply to the best practices in cybersecurity.
According to reports only one entity working on autonomous cars has requested the required permits from the DMV while there are reportedly about 50 companies in the state that are developing self-driving car technology.
