BlackBerry in advanced talks with Jaguar Land Rover on software for autonomous cars

BlackBerry is in advanced talks with Tata Motors’s Jaguar Land Rover unit to provide the automaker with the software portfolio for building autonomous cars, according to some media reports. If the deal between the two companies is signed JLR would get the access to the Blackberry’s QNX software suite, that would help the company to design autonomous cars.

BlackBerry trying to find a place in the automotive ecosystem as a software supplier and has entered into an agreement with a number of companies working in this field. Blackberry’s QNX software basically provides security solutions — that securely manages and handles millions of lines of code– and operating system–that connects various components– the company doesn’t write codes for the driverless cars.

Blackberry had entered into an agreement with Ford that allows the automaker expanded use of BlackBerry’s QNX and security software. It is being speculated that the deal between JLR and Blackberry may be similar in scope.

Recently it signed a commercial partnership agreement with Delphi, according to which BlackBerry will provide the operating system for Delphi’s autonomous driving system. The company also tested its self-driving car on the roads of Ottawa in Canada.

The Canadian company is also partnering another Tata company Tata Elxsi, under which Tata Elxsi provides integration and customization services for the embedded software solutions from BlackBerry.
