While all eyes are currently fixed on autonomous vehicles, the reality is we’re still at least 10 years out from full level-5 autonomy. And before we reap the benefits of an autonomous future, we must focus on laying the most critical foundation of the connected car ecosystem, known as the next wave of technological innovation, or over-the-air (OTA) software and data updates.
With OTA projected to save automakers over $35 billion by 2022, it’s not only because of financial reasons automakers cannot afford to overlook OTA–it’s also relevance. OTA, for the first time, allows the collection and transmission of vehicle-centric data, allowing automakers to learn and engage with the driver in ways we’ve yet to realize. Everything from recall mitigation to cybersecurity updates, insurance benefits, vehicle diagnosics, connection with the smart home – to name a few examples – will become common place for the driver within a couple years.
