A team of ethical hackers from Keen Security Lab successfully hacked a Tesla Model X. Last year they had hacked a Telsa Model S too. Keen Security Lab is an arm of the Chinese internet company Tencent, which is a major stakeholder in Tesla.
The team was able to open and close the car’s trunk and doors by gaining remote access to the car through its web browser. They were also able to activate its brakes remotely, which is a worrying situation as it puts the safety of the vehicle under serious threat.
But considering the complexity of this hacking, it is very difficult to hack the car for people even with sound technical knowhow. However, Keen Security Lab informed Tesla of the vulnerabilities and it is being reported that these will be done away with soon by the automaker via an over-the-air update to the car’s software.
