Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to install GPS in garbage collection vans in order to track the garbage collection vehicles and also to ensure that they are punctual in collecting garbage.

The decision of installation of GPS was taken as AMC received complaints from residents that the vans were not punctual in collecting garbage. AMC’s garbage collection vans will soon be fitted with GPS receivers so that the vans can be tracked while on duty.

AMC officials said that the intitially no one took the complaints seriously but as the complaint increased they inquired and were surprised that the vans were not visiting the places they were assigned. “Since we were not able to keep track of the vans, it decided to fit the vehicles with GPS receivers. The entire system for all the vehicles will cost Rs 2.5 crore and the contract for the systems with code solutions will be for three years.” a AMC official said.

The GPS system will help the AMC monitor the movement of the garbage lifting vehicles and ensure that they visit the areas assigned to them regularly. Currently, AMC has 700-odd vehicles for collecting garbage from different residential and commercial localities of the city. The daily Garbage collection comes to around 3,500 tonnes.
